Parliament of the Maldives has stated the attack on Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed near his residence on May 6 was an act of terrorism.
In an emergency sitting held following the attack which left the Speaker with multiple injuries, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla read out a statement on behalf of the Parliament condemning the cowardly attack. The Deputy Speaker described the attack as an act of terrorism targeting the life of Speaker Nasheed. She announced that the Parliament will continue its emergency sitting until details of the Speaker’s condition are disclosed.
The attack took place near the former President’s residence, Kenereege in Galolhu ward of Male’ City. An explosion took place while he was about to get into his car, injuring him as well as his driver, a security personal and a bystander. He is currently undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital.
