The main opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has condemned the attack against Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed near his residence in Male’ on May 6.
A statement released by PPM on May 6 shortly after the attack on the Parliament Speaker read that the party strongly condemns the attack and wished the Speaker and former President a speedy recovery from his injuries. The party called for a thorough investigation and urgent action to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.
The Parliament had earlier revealed Speaker Nasheed sustained injuries to his eyes and is being prepped for an emergency surgery. His driver, a security personal and a bystander also sustained injuries following the explosion.
Several senior state officials, leaders of political parties and members of the parliament have condemned the attack. As such, former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, and several other senior figures have tweeted their condemnation of the incident.
