Second round of elections to be held on May 1 and June 5

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced the second round of the Local Council Elections (LCE) and the Women's Development Committee Elections (WDCE) will be held on May 1 and June 5.

At a press conference, President of ECM Ahmed Shareef revealed it has been decided to hold the re-elections in certain constituencies due to tied results. In this regard, re-elections will be held for local councils in four islands and women's development committees in six islands to break tied results in the elections held on April 10.

Re-elections for the local council will be held in Thakandhoo in Haa Alif Atoll, Kihaadhoo in Baa Atoll, Raiymandhoo in Meemu Atoll, Dharanboodhoo in Faafu Atoll, Gaadhiffushi in Thaa Atoll and Maavah in Laamu Atoll. Re-elections for the Women's Development Committee will be held in Uligamu in Haa Alif Atoll, Magoodhoo in Noonu Atoll, Maakurathu in Raa Atoll, Kendhoo in Baa Atoll, Fulidhoo in Vaavu Atoll and Kalaidhoo in Laamu Atoll.

ECM is also holding elections for seats no candidates contested in the elections held on April 10. As such, elections are to be held on June 5 to fill the vacant seats in the women's development committees in Nolhivaram and Neykurendhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Fulhadhoo in Baa Atoll, Dhiffushi in Kaafu Atoll, Feridhoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll, Rakeedhoo in Vaavu Atoll and Raiymandhoo in Meemu Atoll.

A total of 975 local councillors and 905 women's development committee members were elected on April 10.
