MDP wins 400 seats, PPM wins 325 seats in LCE, WDCE

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won 400 seats and the opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) won 325 seats in the Local Council Elections (LCE) and the Women's Development Committee Elections (WDCE) held on April 10.

The official results show the majority of seats in the local councils and women's development committees were won by candidates from MDP. MDP also won three mayoral seats and 11 council presidencies. The opposition PPM won the mayoral seat in Male' City as well as the majority of Male' City Council and 7 council presidencies.

The elections on April 10 was the largest ever to be in the Maldives, with 2,264 candidates contesting in the LCE and 1,670 candidates contesting in the WDCE. A total of 1,912 candidates were elected in the polls held an year late due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
