The newly formed Police Board has elected its first President and Vice President.
The Police Board was established earlier this month, as per the newly enacted Police Service Act. The board has elected Ali Faiz as its President, and Ahmed Fayaz Hassan as its Vice President. Other members present in the board are Aishath Noora Mohamed, Ahmed Nashid, Adam Ibrahim, Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, and Safa Shareef.
The act mandates the formation of a seven-member Police Board to assist in matters of appointing the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Police and advice ministers and relevant authorities on police matters. The board consists of two members appointed by the president, three members who are experts from the relevant fields, and two members appointed to represent the general public.
President Solih ratified the Police Service Act in December 2020. The Act establishes the fundamental principles, guidelines, roles and other aspects concerning police officers, aiming to streamline policing in the country by ensuring adherence to the constitution. The Act also promotes professional standards within the police force and paves the way for the establishment of community-based policing services under a decentralised system of governance.
