Campaign heats up for position of Male' City Deputy Mayor

Several newly elected councillors of Male’ City Council have started campaigning for the post of Deputy Mayor of Male' City.

The opposition coalition consisting of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC) won 12 out of 19 seats in the Male' City Council. Following the elections held on April 10, Vice President of PNC Ibrahim Shujau, Nahula Ali and Abdulla Nasir, who were all elected to the Male’ City Council, have been vying for the post of Deputy Mayor.

In a public letter posted on Twitter, Nahula said the PPM leadership and former President Abdulla Yameen would wish for young and female party members to vote for a woman with courage and experience. Meanwhile, Nasir said he is prepared to work with Mayor-Elect of Male' City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the advancement of the people.

Although PNC Vice President Shujau has not officially announced his candidacy, his supporters have been campaigning on social media on his behalf, claiming he is the most qualified candidate for the position. The opposition leadership has not made a comment over its elected councilors vying for the deputy mayoral post.

In the first sitting of the newly elected council following the swearing-in ceremony, a vote would be taken among the councillors to elect a Deputy Mayor.
