MDP requests recount of ballots for six constituencies of Male’

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested a recount of ballots cast in the recent Local Council Elections (LCE) for six constituencies of Male’ City.

Speaking at a press conference held on April 14, MDP’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef said the party has received several complaints regarding the voting procedures in some constituencies during the recent election. Latheef said one of the main concerns was the number of invalid votes exceeding the difference in votes between the top two candidates. He said with reference to these concerns, MDP has requested the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) to recount the ballots for six constituencies of Male’ City.

ECM revealed the commission had received 89 complaints regarding the elections, including 21 complaints submitted by political parties. ECM said all complaints will be addressed before announcing the final results of the election.
