Male' City Council will focus on resolving housing issues: Mayor-elect

Mayor-elect of Male' City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated the newly elected Male' City Council will aim to resolve the housing shortages faced in the Greater Male' Region.

Addressing a function held at the main headquarters of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), Dr. Muizzu said residents of Male' voted for him to resolve the various problems they face, with the main issue being the housing shortage. Muizzu said he saw the poor living conditions of residents in his visits to the households during his campaign trail. He said the Male' City Council will focus on solving the housing shortage with the assistance of the government and other relevant authorities.’

Senior members of PPM and PNC were in attendance at the function, as well as the newly-elected councillors for the Male' City Council. Speaking at the function, Vice President of People's National Congress (PNC) Ibrahim Shujau, who was elected as first ever councillor of Hulhumale', said efforts will be taken to solve the worst issues faced by residents in the Greater Male' Region.

Former Housing Minister Muizzu was elected as the Mayor of Male' City on April 10, beating candidate from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Anas Abdul Sattar. Following the result, Muizzu became the first PPM candidate to win the mayoral seat of the Male' City Council. Further, PPM has also won the majority of seats of the Male' City Council for the first time since the establishment of the city council in 2011.
