MDP secures mayoral seats of Addu, Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured the mayoral seats of Addu City, Fuvahmulah City and Kulhudhuffushi City.

As per the latest results, MDP’s Ali Nizar has been confirmed as the winner of the seat for Addu City Mayor, ahead of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Mohamed Latheef. MDP has also secured 7 of the 13 seats of Addu City Council, with PPM winning 3 seats and independent candidates winning another 3 seats.

Meanwhile, the seat of Fuvahmulah City Mayor has been secured by MDP’s candidate Ismail Rafeeq, ahead of PPM’s Mohamed Thoriq and Jumhooree Party (JP)’s Ziyad Zakariyya Hussain. MDP has won 5 out of the 7 seats at Fuvahmulah City Council, with the other two seats going to PPM.

The first ever mayoral election of Kulhudhuffushi City was won by MDP’s candidate Mohamed Athif. He is set to be become the inaugural mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City, following the declaration of the island as a city in January 1, 2020.

Despite MDP’s triumph in the mayoral elections of three cities, the seat for the Mayor of the capital Male’ City was won by PPM’s candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The opposition party has also won some important seats in the Male’ City Council.
