President sends condolences over Prince Philip's death

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has conveyed condolences to Queen Elizabeth II over the death of her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on April 9.

Conveying condolences to Queen Elizabeth and the people of the UK, President Solih praised Prince Philip as a staunch exemplar of public service and said Maldivians fondly recall his visit to the Maldives with Queen Elizabeth in 1972. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited the Maldives in 1972 during their month-long tour of Southeast Asia.

Prince Philip is Queen Elizabeth’s husband of 73 years and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history. He was born on the Greek island of Corfu on June 10, 1921, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Alice. Prince Philip, a leading figure in the British Royal Family for almost seven decades, died aged 99.

Moreover, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid also sent his condolences on Twitter and shared a photo of the royal’s couple trip to the Maldives.

The Maldives became a British Protectorate in 1887 and gained Independence in 1965.
