President casts vote, urges public to vote

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged Maldivians to practice their right to vote, expressing the elections will bring major changes to the governance system. The president made the appeal while speaking to the press after casting his vote in the ongoing Local Council Elections (LCE) and Women’s Development Committee Elections (WDCE).

President Solih voted for the ballot box located in Jamaluddin School, allocated for Lhaviyani Atoll residents in Male’ City. He expressed hope more people will vote during the afternoon despite the elections being held under special circumstances.

Voting for LCE and WDCE began at 0700hrs across the country with special safety measures in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Voting arrangements have been made in all inhabited islands, resorts, and industrial islands. Ballot boxes have also been kept in India and Sri Lanka considering the number of Maldivians residing in those countries.
