Parliament approves appointment of Safa Shareef to Police Board

Parliament of the Maldives has voted to appoint Safa Shareef as the second public representative in the newly formed Police Board.

Safa Shareef’s name had been approved by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations, upon review of all six nominees for the position. Her name was approved by the Parliament with votes from 32 parliamentarians.

The newly formed Police Board must include two members appointed as public representatives. The Parliament had previously approved the appointment of Hamid Abdul Ghafoor as the first public representative of the Police Board.

The Police Board is formed under the new Police Service Act, ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in December 2020. The Act mandates the formation of a 7-member Police Board and a 5-member Appeal Board to look into allegations of corruption, misuse of power and inhumane acts committed by the police officers.
