PPM fined USD 4,850 for breaching Political Parties Act

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has fined Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) USD 4,850 for breaching the Political Parties Act.

ECM took action against PPM after a report submitted by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) regarding the continued protests and gatherings conducted by the party with no regards to the COVID-19 restrictions placed in the Greater Male’ Region. President of ECM Ahmed Shareef said PPM was given the opportunity to respond to the police report before action was taken against the party. Shareef said upon the inquiry, the commission found PPM guilty of breaching the Political Parties Act and therefore has fined the party by USD 4,850.

PPM was also fined in August last year for violating the COVID-19 regulations set by Health Protection Agency (HPA). MPS had also recently fined the party for violating HPA guidelines.
