Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed a request has been submitted to transfer jailed former President Abdulla Yameen to house arrest.
The home ministry said a letter had been submitted to the ministry this week requesting Yameen to be transferred to his house. However, the ministry did not confirm if the letter was submitted by his party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) or directly on his behalf.
Former President Yameen was sentenced to 5 years in prison in November 2019, after the Criminal Court found him guilty of receiving and laundering USD 1 million embezzled from the state in the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). Yameen is also currently under trial for another case of accepting bribes and money laundering, related to the lease of Fuhgiri, Raa Atoll for resort development through MMPRC.
