Parliament votes to appoint Hamid Abdul Ghafoor to Police Board

Parliament of the Maldives has voted to appoint Hamid Abdul Ghafoor as the public representative in the newly formed Police Board.

Hamid, who had previously served as the Parliamentarian for South Henveiru constituency, was the only nominee for the Police Board that was approved by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations. His name was passed by the parliament floor with votes from 41 parliamentarians.

The newly formed Police Board must include two members appointed as public representatives. Therefore, the Parliament has opened applications for the other membership position.

The Police Board is formed under the new Police Service Act, ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in December 2020. The Act mandates the formation of a 7-member Police Board and a 5-member Appeal Board to look into allegations of corruption, misuse of power and inhumane acts committed by the police officers.
