15,000 new housing units to be constructed in Male’ area

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated 15,000 new housing units will be constructed in the Greater Male’ Region as part of efforts to resolve the housing issues faced in the region.

Speaking at an event held for the people of Male’ City as part of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign for the upcoming local council elections, President Solih said surveys conducted by the administration revealed there about 17,000 families in Male’ in need of housing. Noting the Hiyaa housing project conducted by the previous administration provided 7,000 new housing units, the President said the biggest challenge is the large number of people who need to enter these housing units. He said the administration plans to resolve this problem by constructing 15,000 new housing units by the end of the current term.

Speaking on projects planned for this year, President Solih revealed construction of 1,000 new housing units is already underway, while the contract to construct another 2,000 housing units has been awarded to MBCC of India. He said another contract to construct an additional 2,000 housing units will be signed this week.

The President noted the administration had initially pledged to construct 10,000 housing units during the current term. However, he said the administration plans to construct additional housing units, in line with the needs of the people in the Male’ region.
