The Government of the Maldives has condemned the military coup d'etat in Myanmar.
A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 4 stated the Maldives joins the international community in condemning the military coup d'etat of February 1 in Myanmar, and noted with utmost concern, the increasing loss of innocent lives and atrocities being committed against the people of Myanmar by the Military Junta. The Maldives reiterated the call to cease the unlawful detention of the leaders of the civilian government and unarmed protestors, and to uphold their democratic rights enshrined in Myanmar's constitution.
The Maldives further called on the Military Junta to respect the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law and call for an immediate end to the State of Emergency imposed in the wake of the coup. The Maldives further urged the Military to accept the vote and subsequent wishes of the people, to relinquish the power to the elected National Assembly and to safeguard the political and social stability of Myanmar.
The statement further read that the Maldives remains in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in their efforts to realise their democratic aspirations that are inherently linked with peace, freedom and liberties.
