Department of National Registration (DNR) has stated expired national ID cards can be used for voting in the upcoming local council elections.
Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) had asked voters who wish to change address to update their ID cards before February 8. However, DNR suspended its services on January 27 after a staff tested positive for COVID-19.
Following the service suspension, DNR said expired ID cards can be used for voting in the upcoming elections. DNR said the decision was made as it is not safe to gather so many people into the centre when the country is going through another wave of COVID-19 cases.
DNR said expired ID cards will be valid for all services until June 30.
