O’Level and A’Level exams will go ahead as scheduled: Education Ministry

Ministry of Education has stated the Cambridge O’Level and Edexcel A’Level examinations will go ahead as scheduled in the Maldives in May/June this year.

The ministry made the announcement after the UK announced it will not be conducting O’Level and A’Level examinations this year due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country. UK has announced a second lockdown due to a new wave of COVID-19 cases. As a result, all schools and colleges of the UK are currently closed.

Ministry of Education said despite the situation in the UK, the Cambridge O’Level and Edexcel A’Level examinations will go ahead in the Maldives this year as scheduled. As such, the ministry stated both examinations will be held across May and June.

The education ministry was forced to bring major changes to the academic calendar due to the lockdown imposed in the Maldives last year. In this regard, the second semester of the 2020 Academic Year will be conducted from January to June 2021. The new academic year will begin in August this year.

Schools are set to reopen in the Maldives for the second semester of the 2020 Academic Year on January 10. A maximum of 5 hours have been allocated for school sessions for key stages and 2 hours for foundation stage.
