Maldives to reinstate diplomatic ties with Qatar

Maldives has decided to reinstate full diplomatic ties with Qatar.

In a tweet posted announcing the decision of the government of the Maldives, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid said fruitful discussions were held with Qatari officials and authorities following positive developments at the annual summit of Gulf Cooperation Council.

Meanwhile, diplomatic relations have also been restored between Qatar and four Arab states that imposed an embargo against it for three years. The countries had agreed to fully set the differences aside during the Gulf Co-operation Council summit on January 5.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar in 2017, accusing it of supporting terrorism. Following the decision, during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Maldives severed diplomatic relations with Qatar on 5 June 2017.

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Qatar on May 26, 1984. Reinstating diplomatic ties with Qatar was an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
