NCA begins drafting Artists’ Rights Bill

National Centre for the Arts (NCA) has started drafting a bill to protect the rights of professional artists in the Maldives.

NCA, which is operated under the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, said the purpose of the bill is to legally define professional artists and to ensure the protection of their rights. NCA said the legal component of the draft has been contracted to Azur Chambers LLP.

Speaking on the bill, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon said the bill is an important legislation which is needed for the development of professional artists in the Maldives and to promote their talents. She said it is very important that local artists provide their feedback and input during the drafting stage of the bill.

The heritage ministry said the first draft of the bill is expected to be completed by April 28. The ministry said the bill will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Office after finalising the draft through the input of stakeholders.
