NDA to facilitate job opportunities for recovering addicts

National Drug Agency (NDA) has stated job opportunities will be facilitated for recovering drug addicts under its community rehabilitation service.

NDA introduced community rehabilitation to help victims of drug abuse reintegrate into the society as responsible and beneficial citizens. Such individuals are not detained for rehabilitation, and instead undergoes treatment while remaining in the community.

NDA selects individuals for community rehabilitation after conducting a special assessment to check if the person is fit to be treated inside the community. NDA said the treatment takes place in a client-based system, which takes into account the needs of the individual and their life goals and targets.

Speaking to PSM News, Aftercare Coordinator of NDA Mohamed Sobree said community rehabilitation is not just a clinical treatment service which focuses on the physical recovery of the addict. He said the service will ensure the individual can build a successful life after recovery, through the development of life skills. He added NDA will work on facilitating job opportunities through the service, adding the aim is to provide a complete treatment which ensures the physical, psychological and social well-being of the individual.

NDA has recently established a community rehabilitation centre in Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll in collaboration with Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council and Villingili Island Council. Services provided by the centre include drug detoxification, counselling, psychosocial support, training, aftercare and outreach programmes.
