Holistic approach needed to eliminate drug abuse: Gender Minister

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi has stated narcotics abuse can only be eliminated through a holistic approach, with assistance and support from the whole community.

The minister made the remarks while speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the Community Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre “Dhagenaa”, in Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll. This is the first community rehabilitation centre established in the atolls.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Gender Minister said the establishment of the community rehabilitation centre is an important step towards the efforts to rehabilitate victims of drug abuse and reintegrate them back into society. However, she said the efforts will not be successful without the cooperation and support of the whole community. She noted drug abuse can only be eliminated through a holistic approach, which addresses the physical, psychological and social well-being of victims.

The minister went on to note that the new community rehabilitation centre in Villingili will provide healthcare and psychosocial support for patients. The minister said each patient will be classified into one of three categories; High Risk, Medium Risk and Low Risk, after which treatment will proceed as per the policy for each category.

Dhagenaa Community Rehabilitation Centre was established through collaborative efforts of the Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council, Villingili Island Council and the National Drug Agency (NDA). Services provided by the centre include drug detoxification, counselling, psychosocial support, training, aftercare and outreach programmes.
