Addu International Airport Company Limited (AIA) has announced the decision to seek a new operator for the flying school established in Addu City.
AIA announced the decision during a meeting held with members of the Parliamentary Committee on National Development and Heritage, who are visiting Addu City to inquire on the concerns raised regarding the operations of the flying school.
Speaking at the meeting, Managing Director of AIA Qais Naseer said the agreement signed with the Asian Academy of Aeronautics (AAA) to operate the flying school in Gan International Airport will expire in July 2021. He said AIA has decided not to renew the agreement with AAA, and to seek a new operator for the flying school.
Several student pilots of the flying school have expressed concerns over the lengthy delays in completing the programmes conducted by the academy. They have also raised concerns regarding AAA charging fees in US Dollars rather than Maldivian Rufiyaa, as well as several other practices of the academy.
Earlier this month, Vice President Faisal Naseem had also met with some student pilots of AAA to inquire on the issues faced by them. He assured them that the government is closely monitoring the situation of the flying school, and would take action to resolve the issues.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee on National Development and Heritage has also stated it will be conducting meetings with all relevant authorities and students regarding the matter.
