Political conflicts hinder national unity: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated political and religious conflicts present major challenges in maintaining national unity.

Speaking at the special function held on the occasion of National Unity Day, Home Minister Imran said Maldivians must work together to eliminate the factors which cause divisions among the community, such as political and religious conflicts as well as crime. He said the country must learn from lessons of its past to ensure national unity and harmony is not disrupted.

The home minister highlighted the exemplary display of friendship and togetherness showed by Maldivians in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami which hit the country on December 26, 2004. He noted the Maldives was able to overcome the devastating impact of the Tsunami through friendship and unity.

In his remarks, Minister Imran called on the public to work together in a similar show of unity in order to overcome the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As such, he called on the public to assist each other wherever possible and to continue adhering to the instructions of health authorities in order to contain the spread of the disease.
