Ministry of Tourism has stated 20 guesthouses in Greater Male’ region have been granted permission to resume operations.
Guesthouses in the Male’ Region were closed on March 13 as part of efforts to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Guesthouses in the capital have been permitted to resume operations starting from December 14, two months after guesthouses in the atolls were reopened. The delay in granting permission for guesthouses in Male’ area was due to the COVID-19 situation in the capital.
According to statistics, 198 guesthouses have been permitted to reopen altogether, which includes 20 guesthouses from Male’ area. The statistics of the tourism ministry show that guesthouses in 29 islands are currently in operation. This represents a bed capacity of 3,882.
All guesthouses are required to fulfill the health and safety guidelines of Health Protection Agency (HPA) and obtain the approval of respective island councils before being allowed to resume operations.
