The Government of the United States has donated ICU equipment to the Maldives as part of efforts to enhance the COVID-19 treatment capacity of the Maldives.
The donation was handed over by the U.S Ambassador to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Alaina B. Teplitz. The donation was received on behalf of the Maldivian government by High Commissioner of the Maldives to Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razak.
Speaking on the donation, Ambassador Teplitz said the U.S is proud to support the Maldives’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic with the new ICU equipment. She expressed hope the donation would help medical workers and first responders to save lives.
Following the donation, High Commissioner Omar Abdul Razak expressed gratitude towards the U.S government for the generous donations to bolster the efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the Maldives deeply appreciates the U.S help and assistance in a progressively continuous manner, noting it signifies the robust friendship between the two countries for greater Indo-Pacific safety and security.
Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid also expressed his appreciation to the U.S government for the generous donation, stating such continuous support plays a critical part in the resiliency and recovery efforts of the Maldives.
The equipment donated by the U.S government includes 40 oxygen concentrators, to be used with ventilators which had previously been donated by the U.S. The total value of the latest donation is approximately USD 165,000.
The U.S Government has provided numerous assistance to the Maldives to enhance the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S Government has also decided to provide USD 3 million worth of assistance to enhance social services and economic recovery efforts of the Maldives.
