Auditor General Hassan Ziyath has stated stronger actions are needed to ensure accountability through audits.
Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) of the Auditor General’s Office, Ziyath said the Auditor General’s Office has significantly strengthened its work over the past few years, leading to a renewed public confidence in the institution. As such, he noted the Auditor General’s Office has conducted several crucial audits of state institutions to hold state officials accountable in matters which directly affect the public.
However, he said stronger actions are required to ensure accountability of state officials and implement the audit reports.
Speaking further, Ziyath said the main purpose of new SAP is to speed up and strengthen the process of audits. He expressed confidence the new SAP will help to eliminate corruption and ensure transparency and accountability within state institutions.
The new SAP of the Auditor General’s Office was officially inaugurated by the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament, Mohamed Nashiz. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Nashiz highlighted some of the concerns raised by the Auditor General’s Office in relation to budget constraints and limited resources. He expressed hope the concerns would be resolved through the provisions provided in the 2021 State Budget.
Nashiz also encouraged the Auditor General’s Office to continue carrying out its responsibilities with honesty and integrity, noting the Auditor General’s Office is a crucial institution holding government officials accountable and safeguarding public funds.
