HRCM calls for increased disability benefits

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has stated the allowance provided for persons with disabilities needs to be increased in order to support them effectively.

In a statement released on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, HRCM highlighted the difficulties faced by disabled persons in the Maldives and the importance of extending additional financial support for them. HRCM said the Disability Allowance currently provided in the Maldives is not sufficient to fulfill the basic needs of persons with disabilities.

In the statement, HRCM also highlighted the importance of increasing accessibility to services for disabled persons and ensuring the protection of their rights. As such, the commission noted entrance and exit of public facilities should be designed to enable people with disabilities to access the facilities without difficulty. The commission also highlighted the importance of upgrading the services provided by the Home for People with Special Needs.

HRCM revealed a total of 72 cases had been lodged at the commission over the last 4 years with regards to the violation of the fundamental rights of disabled persons. The commission said most of the cases involve negligence and requests by families to transfer a disabled person to state care.

HRCM also highlighted the importance of increasing the contribution of disabled persons in national development. As such, HRCM stated development projects in the Maldives must be undertaken with input from disabled persons, noting this is an important step in reaching Sustainable Development Goals.

HRCM further acknowledged the important work undertaken by civil societies and organisations in protecting the rights of disabled persons. The commission also highlighted the role played by the media in creating public awareness on issues related to disabled persons.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is marked annually on December 3. The day is observed to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
