The Parliamentary Group of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed the decision to endorse the no-confidence motion launched against Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal.
The no-confidence motion against Minister Maleeh was initiated by Parliamentarian Meekail Ahmed Naseem, with signatures from 9 other parliamentarians. MDP’s Parliamentary Group unanimously passed the decision to endorse the no-confidence motion during a meeting held on November 22.
A no-confidence motion was launched against the Communication Minister, citing his failure to fulfill his responsibilities in formulating the regulations mandated under the Telecommunication Act. As such, the letter by Parliamentarian Meekail Ahmed Naseem noted the Communication Authority of Maldives (CAM) has not formulated any of the regulations required under the Telecommunication Act in the past two years. Noting the responsibility lies on the ministry tasked with overseeing CAM, Parliamentarian Meekail said Maleeh’s failure to carry out his responsibilities has hindered the efforts to regulate the telecommunication sector of the Maldives.
The no-confidence motion against Minister Maleeh came soon after he gave a TV interview criticising parliamentarians from MDP. Maleeh was appointed to the cabinet on a slot given to Jumhooree Party (JP), one of the coalition partners of the government.
