Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has stated the government will continue to deliver on its pledges for the development of the nation.
Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the newly developed Hoarafushi Airport, Transport Minister Nahula noted the development of the airport is a dream-come-true for the people of Hoarafushi and nearby islands. Noting the airport will serve as an economic hub of the region, the minister thanked President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for delivering on his promise to the region. She said this government will continue to deliver on its pledges for the development of the nation.
Speaking on the benefits of the airport, Minister Nahula noted the airport will help to kick start many economic activities, including tourism, in the region. She noted the development will also create more job opportunities for the people in Haa Alifu Atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony, Parliamentarian representing the Hoarafushi constituency Ahmed Saleem said this was the happiest day in the history of Hoarafushi, as the island has longed for this dream to come true. Noting Hoarafushi Airport was the quickest to be developed with land reclamation, Saleem said the project is an important milestone for the country as well.
Development of Hoarafushi Airport was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in early 2019. 842,200 cubic metres of land were reclaimed for the development of the airport.
Upon inauguration, Hoarafushi Airport has become the northernmost airport in the Maldives.
