Children’s Homes to be established for children under state care

Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services has revealed plans to establish Children’s Homes for children under state care.

In an exclusive interview given to PSM News on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the administration, Minister of State for Gender, Family and Social Services Zifleena Hassan revealed the ministry is working on establishing facilities which can provide a safe and peaceful environment for children under state care. As such, she revealed the ministry is working on establishing Children’s Homes in five different regions of the Maldives. She noted the facilities will be established in Dhihdhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Eydhafushi in Baa Atoll, Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll and Fuvahmulah City.

The state minister further revealed the new facilities will be established in the accommodation blocks of Family and Children’s Service Centres established in the islands. She said the concepts for the Children’s Homes have already been developed.

Children under state care are currently accommodated in Kudakudhinge' Hiyaa in Villimale’ and Fiyavathi in Hulhumale’. The gender ministry said 205 children are currently under state care across the two facilities.
