Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon has stated efforts are underway to renovate 4 heritage sites in the atolls.
In an exclusive interview given to PSM News on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the administration, Heritage Minister Yumna said the Culture and Heritage Act has created an effective pathway for the preservation of heritage sites across the Maldives. In this regard, the minister noted the Act has helped to declare the heritage sites in the country, and define the role of local councils and relevant authorities in preserving the sites. She added the Act also specifies the punishment for harming or vandalising heritage sites.
The heritage minister noted the administration has been undertaking important efforts in preserving heritage sites across the country. In this regard, she noted the ministry is currently seeking contractors to renovate 4 heritage sites, including Vaaruge' in Baarah, Atige' in Faresmaathodaa, Lily House in Kelaa and the Old Mosque in Kudarikilu. She said the sites will be opened for use as site museums or art galleries following renovation.
The heritage minister further noted plans have been formulated to renovate and preserve several coral stone mosques built in islands. She said the ministry is working with island councils and local NGOs to preserve all cultural and heritage sites in the islands.
Minister Yumna stated the main objective of preserving heritage sites is to ensure Maldivian culture and heritage is protected and carried forward to future generations. She said the heritage sites can also be used to generate income from tourists to island communities.
