President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured the sovereignty and independence of the nation will not be compromised by his administration under any circumstances. The president made the statement in his televised address on the occasion of the Republic Day of the Maldives.
In his address, President Solih said the main two priorities of his administration is protecting the religious unity of the Maldives and safeguarding the independence and sovereignty of the nation. He assured his administration will not compromise independence, sovereignty and religious unity under any kind of circumstances.
The president further noted several fundamental rights of the people had been withheld when he assumed office two years ago. The president said his first duty as president was to restore the fundamental rights which had been deprived from the people, such as freedom of speech, freedom of press and the Right to Information. He added his administration will continue to promote and protect these rights in order to safeguard the democratic values of the country.
In his address, the president also called on the press to carry out their duties in a responsible manner. Noting the press plays a critical role in shaping the future of the nation, the president called on the press not to spread misinformation and to prioritise conveying the truth rather than sensational stories.
