Ministry of Finance has allocated USD 71.4 million in the 2021 State Budget for the development projects of Velana International Airport (VIA).
Speaking at the budget presentation at the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer highlighted the importance of continuing the projects at VIA, which acts as the main international gateway of the Maldives. He noted USD 71.4 million has been allocated for various infrastructure projects in VIA which have been planned for next year.
The finance minister further noted the State Budget includes allocations for the upgrade of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, Gan International Airport and several domestic airports in the Maldives. He said the upgrades will help to widen tourist activities in the country and create more job opportunities for locals.
Several infrastructure projects are already underway at VIA, including the development of new seaplane and cargo terminals. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) had earlier revealed the new Code F runway developed in VIA will also be brought into operation next year.
