The government of India has decided to grant an additional substantial financial assistance package to support the Maldivian economy and assist in the economic recovery post COVID-19 pandemic.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Indian High Commission in the Maldives commemorating the 55th Independence Day of the Maldives. The statement noted an assistance of USD 400 million through an extended currency swap arrangement has been already made available to the Maldives to tide over liquidity shortage. The statement further expressed the India First policy of the Maldives and Neighbourhood First policy of India have set the foundation of the growing relationship between the two countries.
India has provided assistance to the government of the Maldives in the form of medical supplies, medical teams, essential food supplies and financial assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The diplomatic relations between India and Maldives were established the same year that Maldives attained independence. This year India and Maldives celebrate 55 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
On July 26, the Indian High Commission in the Maldives launched a photo exhibition commemorating the historical journey traversed by the two countries. The high commission said photographs depicting milestone events from the long journey of the two countries have been put up on display.
