National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has commenced a survey on the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on resort workers in the Maldives.
NBS revealed the aim of the survey is to understand the situation of resort workers in the Maldives amid the COVID-19 pandemic, including any negative effects on their employment. NBS said the survey would be conducted through an SMS sent through the mobile subscriber of the resort employee.The bureau revealed the survey is conducted in association with Ooredoo Maldives, Dhiraagu and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
There have been several complaints that resort workers are being dismissed or sent on no-pay leaves due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has established a Job Centre to register individuals who have been dismissed or sent on no-pay leaves by their employers. An income support allowance has also been introduced to compensate such individuals.
