Restrictions imposed on crossing Sinamale’ Bridge

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced access to Sinamale’ Bridge will be restricted everyday between 0100 hours and 0900 hours, starting from May 15.

MPS stated the general public would not be allowed to cross Sinamale’ Bridge between 0100 hours and 0900 hours. However, MPS stated exemptions would be made for essential travels and security services.

MPS has been handing fines to individuals who are found on the streets of Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villimale’ without a police permit amid the lockdown imposed in the region. As such, MPS revealed over 3,000 people have been fined while 207 people have been arrested for breaching lockdown orders on multiple occasions.

MPS has warned individuals who breach lockdown orders will be handed a fine of USD 65, while multiple breaches could lead to arrest or transfer to a quarantine facility. The public has been urged to seek a permit from the online portal established by MPS before going out for essential purposes.

The lockdown imposed in the Greater Male’ Region due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been extended until May 28.
