Over 2,300 people fined for breaching lockdown orders

Over 2,300 people have been fined for breaching lockdown orders in the Greater Male’ Region.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) stated 2,312 people have been fined after being found on the streets of Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villimale’ without a permit. MPS stated this includes 1,965 people from Male’, 290 people from Hulhumale’ and 57 people from Villimale’. The police revealed a total of 136 people were fined on May 4.

Individuals breaching lockdown orders are fined by an amount not exceeding USD 65. In addition, the police have also arrested 137 people who breached the lockdown orders, including 129 people from Male’ and 8 people from Hulhumale’. MPS revealed 4 people had been arrested on May 4.

The lockdown imposed in Greater Male’ Region has been extended until May 14. A police permit is required for individuals who need to go out for essential purposes during the lockdown. An online portal has been established to issue permits.

MPS revealed 3 types of permits are being issued to businesses right now, which are vehicle permits, support staff permits and delivery staff permits. Furthermore, MPS has been issuing shopping permits for one individual from every household every 3 days, for the duration of one hour. The permits are also currently issued to be used in a specific region.
