Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has expressed the importance of developing different talents in journalism and developing human resources.
Delivering the national address commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2020, Home Minister Imran stated it is crucial to ensure freedom of the press to maintain an independent democratic environment. Noting human resources need to be developed in the sector, he urged to refrain from spreading false news to minimise the impact of such actions on the society.
The home minister appealed to maintain the limitation of press freedom reminding to keep in mind every right comes with a responsibility. He said journalists are vital professionals in a democratic country, adding the administration aims to develop the sector.
Meanwhile, the Maldives registered the biggest rise in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index. The Maldives has moved up 19 places in the report since the presidential election 2018, which saw a change of government. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) revealed the Maldives is ranked 79th in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index, with a global score of 29.93.
