President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated future efforts to build resilience must address vulnerabilities from climate shocks and pandemics such as COVID-19. The president made the remarks in a tweet commemorating Earth Day 2020.
Recognising the urgency of climate actions, President Solih stated climate change combined with COVID-19 heightens the vulnerability of island nations such as the Maldives. The president expressed efforts to enhance resilience must address and prioritise the impacts of such pandemics and climate shocks.
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.
