Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has decided to seek advice from the parliament regarding the constitutional matter over postponing local council elections (LCE) and women's development committee (WDC) elections, after withdrawing the case it submitted to the Supreme Court of Maldives.
In a tweet, ECM stated the decision to withdraw the case from the apex court was made following the remarks from the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions that it could provide a solution to postponing the elections. Speaking at the committee, President of ECM Ahmed Shareef said the case was submitted to the court seeking advice in case the elections could not be held during the period mentioned in the constitution.
The constitution states, an election can only be delayed when a health crisis befalls the nation and when authorities urge not to arrange public gatherings and refrain from large social activities during a health crisis.
