Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has revealed a special plan has been formulated and submitted to Criminal Court to conclude cases that have been pending in the court for several years.
Noting pending court cases have caused several people to be unjustly detained, PG Shameem said efforts are underway to resolve the issue. Shameem noted there are over 55 cases in Criminal Court that are over five years old, adding 20 of these cases have been put on hold after reaching a conclusive stage.
Shameem said a special plan has been formulated with a schedule for 9 judges in Criminal Court to conclude over 300 cases which have been pending for over 3 years. The prosecutor general said the cases can be completed within two months if the plan is followed.
Criminal Court concluded 1,339 cases last year. The court has said efforts are underway to conclude long overdue cases within this year.
