President announces three-phase housing project

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has vowed free housing for all citizens with no income who are in need of housing. The president made the pledge addressing a gathering held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

President Solih said the administration's housing project would be carried out in three phases. In this regard, under the first phase, according to the president, free housing would be provided for all citizens with no income who are in need of housing. The president said, under phase two, the administration will provide assistance for citizens who cannot make ends meet, after paying rent. Moreover, under phase three, the president plans to facilitate financial means for those who wish to purchase apartments.

President Solih has vowed there will be no citizen in need of housing by the end of his five-year term. At the gathering, the president revealed apartments, developed as part of the first housing project by the administration, would consist of 950 square feet rooms and that rent would not exceed USD 388 per month. Noting when it comes to housing, Male' City is in a dire state, the president stressed on the importance of making the capital city a liveable place. He reiterated discontent regarding the social housing schemes carried out by the previous administration.

On March 18, President Solih announced a massive housing project targeting the residents of Male' City. Further, in this year's Presidential Address, the president announced an additional 4-thousand housing units would be constructed in Hulhumale'.
