Male’ City Council begin removing dewatering pipes on sidewalks

Male' City Council has announced it has begun efforts to remove the dewatering pipes that have been lining the sidewalks of the capital city.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Deputy Mayor of Male' City Shamau Shareef said the council has begun work on removing the dewatering pipes on the sidewalks. The deputy mayor added on collecting information about the pipes, it has come to their knowledge that some of the pipes are not even in use. He said in addition to dewatering pipes that are not in use, the council would be removing pipes that have not been labelled in accordance with set guidelines.

The city council maintains that if work is carried out in accordance with the guidelines, dewatering at any construction site should be completed within 30 days and the pipes should be removed after that. However, the city council noted most construction companies do not adhere to that practice.

The council also stressed on the difficulties that construction companies face and how work at some sites have come to a standstill, due to the inability to get permission to lay dewatering pipes in some areas of Male' City.

The council revealed under their current efforts, unnecessary dewatering pipes that have been lining the sidewalks of Male' City would be removed within a short period of time, making sidewalk-access easier for pedestrians.
