Gender Minister assures commitment to prioritising empowerment

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef assures to continue investing in efforts to further women's rights until every woman and girl in the Maldives achieve equal opportunities, choices, acceptance and access. Gender Minister made the remarks delivering her plenary statement at the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) held in United Nations Headquarters.

In her statement, Gender Minister said, government of Maldives prioritize empowering women and finding sustainable solutions to issues that women face. In this regard, Minister noted efforts are underway to ease the difficulties faced by women in job market. Furthermore, Minister also spoke on the efforts of the government to ensure gender equality.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The CSW is instrumental in promoting women's rights, documenting the reality of women's lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The 63rd session of CSW is being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 11 to 22 March 2019. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are attending the session.

The priority theme of the session is social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls while review theme is women's empowerment and the link to sustainable development.
