High court concludes hearing in appeal case filed by former president Yameen

High Court of Maldives has concluded all hearings in the case filed by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, appealing his arrest on money laundering charges. It was a closed hearing.

Criminal Court issued a warrant for the arrest of former President Yameen on February 18, citing a police intelligence report. With the appeal hearings adjourned, the next hearing is likely to see a verdict issued, although no dates were disclosed.

In an extensive investigation into money laundering accusations leveled against the former President, it was revealed the he received over USD 1.4 million during the presidential campaign alone as funds deposited to his bank account.

Yameen is also being charged with providing false information to mislead an investigation. Criminal Court has ordered to keep Yameen in custody until the end of the investigation. Following the order, he is being held in Maafushi Prison.
