Maldives-India visa facilitation agreement comes into effect

Maldives and India has begun implementing the new visa agreement signed during the official trip of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to India.

The Agreement on Facilitation of Visa between the Maldives and India entered into force starting March 11, following the finalisation of all necessary legal formalities and with the exchange of diplomatic notes to that effect between both countries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed.

The agreement was signed during the state visit to India by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih last December, to facilitate easier travel between both countries and enhance the Maldives-India relationship.

The agreement will further facilitate easier travel for Maldivians visiting India for tourism, medical care, education and business transactions. Under the agreement, India will provide a liberal visa policy for Maldivians seeking medical treatment as well as education and business opportunities in India.

In addition, the visa deal will allow Maldivian businessmen and tourists to stay in India for 90 days without a Visa. Maldivians with tourist visas can also stay in India for treatment if such a necessity arises.
