Maldives signs 12 key agreements with China, including FTA

President of China, Xi Jinping and First Lady Madam Peng Liyuan have officially welcomed President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, who are on a State Visit to China. On arrival of President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, a 21-gun salute was offered, followed by the National Anthems of both countries played by the Chinese Military Band. The President of China then accompanied President Yameen to inspect the Guards of Honour.

During President Abdulla Yameen's state visit, 12 key agreements were signed with a view to enhance trade, professional and socioeconomic development as well as technological and other collaborations between the two countries. The agreements signed include a Free Trade Agreement between China and Maldives. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed and Minister of Commerce of China, Zhong Shan.

Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding was signed between China and Maldives on Cooperation within the Framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative. The agreement was signed by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi.

A memorandum of understanding was also signed between China Banking Regulatory Commission and Maldives Monetary Authority. The agreement was signed by the Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority, Ahmed Naseer and the Chairman of China Banking Regulatory Commission Guo Shuqing.

The signing ceremony was held at the Great Hall of People in Beijing. President Yameen and President Xi were present at the signing ceremony.
