President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom inaugurates the new water production centre, RO Annex, of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).

The existing water and sewerage system in Male' city was designed 37 years ago, to cater a population of seven thousand. Since its establishment, Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has worked diligently to provide the people of Male' with potable water and manage waste water sustainably, and at present serves approximately more than 50% of the Maldivian population. To tackle the obstacles faced by MWSC, the new water production centre, RO Annex, was officially launched by the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

In addition to the new RO Annex, MWSC is currently working on the development works of a 2000 cubic metre RO plant in Male' city.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new water production centre, Managing Director of MWSC Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed assured that a permanent solution has been brought to manage and supply water in Maldives. Fazul said that efforts are being made to enhance the water supply situation in atolls in the same manner as Greater Male' Region. He revealed that under these efforts, a RO Annex at Kulhudhuffushi Island of Haa Dhaalu Atoll will be launched mid-2018.

At the launching ceremony, Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer appreciated the dedication of MWSC in providing service to the nation and highlighted efforts by the company to decrease the cost of the services. The new water production centre was inaugurated under the water security plan, with the aim of decentralising the operation hub and providing a long-term irrigation service.

The new RO plant has the capacity to produce 5000 tons of water, which is an increase of 25% of water security in Male' region.
